What Is Pediatric Meningitis? - Healthline

Image
Meningitis refers to inflammation around the brain and spine, often due to viral or bacterial infection. The infection causes swelling in the meninges, which are thin layers of tissue around the brain and spinal cord. If untreated, meningitis can be life threatening. Pediatric meningitis describes the disease's effects in infants, children, and teens. Meningitis can occur in people of all ages, but newborns and people with weakened immune systems are at an increased risk. Two key vaccines, MenB and MenACWY, protect against strains of bacterial meningitis, the most dangerous kind. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends these vaccines for all kids 11 to 12 years old, with a booster later. They also recommend the Hib vaccine for all kids under 5 years old. This vaccine has been very effective at reducing meningitis mortality rates in children. We'll go over how to recognize the signs of meningitis in different age groups, what treatment methods are avail...

Doctor Reveals This Unusual Symptom Affecting Eyesight Could Be An Early Indicator Of Omicron - Suggest

Image
At the end of December of last year, the Omicron variant had been reported in most parts of the country. Since its emergence, the virus has spread more rapidly than the original SARS-CoV-2 virus. Therefore, the CDC suspects that anyone with Omicron can spread the virus, regardless of their vaccination status.   In spite of this, COVID vaccines have proven to protect against severe illness, hospitalizations, and even death. Even so, breakthrough infections can still occur and cause symptoms.  One unusual symptom that has been linked to Omicron has stood out in particular. This surprising symptom can inflict havoc on the eyes and might be an early indicator that someone has been infected with COVID-19. COVID-19 And Your Eyes Among the most common complaints of those with omicron are cough, sore throat, fever, or loss of taste or smell. However, some patients also are plagued with something more unusual: itchy eyes. Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye...

News Feature: Climate change hastens disease spread across the globe - pnas.org

Image
Trends in some regions are clear, but insect biology, climate quirks, and public health preparedness will determine whether outbreaks occur. Late last November, a young man walked into Renee Salas' emergency room with a circular rash spreading across his leg. Salas, an attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, treated him for possible Lyme disease from a tick bite—a diagnosis that bloodwork later confirmed. Field crews at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station track the diversity and abundance of disease-carrying mosquitoes using traps baited with a yeast–hay infusion mixed with water. They also use traps that attract the mosquitoes using dry ice and light. Image credit: Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. WHO says polio detected in Malawi in setback to eradication - The Washington Post

JOHANNESBURG — The World Health Organization said authorities in Malawi have detected a case of polio in the southern African country's capital, another setback in continuing efforts to eradicate the highly infectious paralytic disease globally. In a statement on Friday, the U.N. health agency said officials had identified wild poliovirus disease in a young child in Lilongwe, the first time the wild virus has been detected on the African continent in five years. Although polio has been spreading in numerous African countries in recent years, those outbreaks were linked to viruses originally contained in vaccines, not to the wild virus. In very rare instances, the live virus in the oral polio vaccine can mutate into a version capable of causing epidemics, particularly in populations that haven't been immunized. WHO said lab tests showed the polio virus detected in Malawi is connected to the strain that has been spreading in Pakistan's Sindh province, where the disease r...

Dropping masks could have an unintended side effect: the return of sniffles and stomach bugs - The Boston Globe

Image
The long-range forecast for this spring includes a lot of sniffles. Two years of wearing masks, avoiding crowds, and trying not to catch COVID-19 had a welcome, if unplanned, byproduct: many people caught fewer colds and stomach bugs. But that could soon change. At the end of the month, Massachusetts will no longer require masks in schools and has dropped its recommendation that healthy vaccinated people wear masks indoors. Doctors say that means we should brace ourselves for the return of common infections many people have blissfully dodged for the past two years. "You will see a lot of anecdotal reports that the primary care offices and urgent cares are a little slammed," said Dr. Christina Hermos, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center. Social measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus have disrupted the transmission of many common pathogens around the world, most notably the flu. The flu virus barely made an appea...

Pneumonia: 3 causes, common symptoms and when to seek help - nebraskamed.com

Image
Pneumonia is an illness we hear about often. There's a reason. It is a common disease that causes illness and death worldwide.    If it conjures up thoughts of severe illness, you are right. The symptoms vary from mild fever and cough to severe difficulty breathing and sepsis.    Pneumonia is the second leading cause of hospitalization after childbirth. It is the most common infectious cause of death.     "Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that causes inflammation and may cause fluid build-up within the tiny sacs of the lungs," says Tammy Wichman, MD, Nebraska Medicine pulmonologist. "It can be caused by a virus, bacteria or a fungus. For healthy individuals, it usually isn't serious if treated early on. However, pneumonia can be quite serious for the elderly, people with weakened immune systems and young children." What causes pneumonia?  Bacterial pneumonia is commonly cau...
