The horrific bird flu that has wiped out 36 million chickens and turkeys, explained - Vox.com

Image
The final month of Minnesota Timberwolves basketball was livelier than ever this season, and not just because they nearly upset the Memphis Grizzlies in their first-round playoff series. During one game in mid-April, a woman glued her hand to the court. A few days later, another woman chained herself to the goal post. The following week, a third woman, dressed as a referee, stormed the court before removing her jacket, exposing a shirt underneath that read "Glen Taylor roasts animals alive." The protests, coordinated by the animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere, were aimed at the Timberwolves' majority owner Glen Taylor. Taylor also owns Rembrandt Enterprises, a large Iowa egg producer that has culled — meaning deliberately killed — 5.3 million of its hens in response to a widespread bird flu outbreak (and then laid off nearly all of its staff). Marrison: Tips to prevent Lyme disease - Coshocton Tribune

Image
Emily Marrison  |  Columnist A little over a decade ago, we first became aware that Coshocton County was a new hotspot for the blacklegged tick. This is significant, because ticks are the main way Lyme disease is transmitted from the white-footed mouse to humans. If you feel like you have heard more about Lyme disease in recent years, that is because it is more prevalent in eastern and southeastern Ohio now than in previous decades. To raise awareness about the disease and spread the word about prevention, May is recognized as Lyme disease awareness month. Lyme disease was first identified in 1975 in Lyme, Connecticut. An unusually large number of children were being diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers discovered most of the affected children lived and played near wooded areas where ticks live. Further study found the children had tick bites from blacklegged ticks. Here in Ohio, there are three kinds of ticks that hav...

Therapeutic Target against Common Fungus Uncovered by Cryo-Electron Microscopy - Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News

Image
Most people carry the fungus Candida albicans on their bodies, without causing many problems. However, when a systemic infection occurs with this fungus, it is dangerous and difficult to treat. The fungus is also becoming more drug resistant, so there is a need for new drug targets. Now, an international group of scientists, including Albert Guskov, PhD, associate professor at the University of Groningen, have used single-particle cryogenic electron microscopy to determine the structure of the fungal ribosome. Their findings reveal a potential therapeutic target. Their findings were published in the journal Science Advances in a paper titled, "E-site drug specificity of the human pathogen Candida albicans ribosome." " Candida albicans is a widespread commensal fungus with substantial pathogenic potential and steadily increasing resistance to current antifungal drugs," wrote the researchers. "It is known to be resistant to cycloheximide (CHX) that binds ...

Can you go to an urgent care center for a yeast infection? - Medical News Today

Image
In most cases, a person does not need to seek medical treatment for a yeast infection. However, if symptoms are severe or home remedies do not work, urgent care centers can provide fast access to treatment. A yeast infection, which doctors also call vaginal candidiasis, is a relatively common fungal infection. It can cause painful itching and burning in the vagina and around the vulva. Although it can also infect the penis and other areas of the body, this is less common. Yeast infections are not usually dangerous, but untreated infections can spread throughout the body. In rare cases, they can cause the dangerous infection candidemia. People can typically manage a yeast infection with home remedies, but if these do not work, they may need to seek medical care. Read more to learn about when a person should seek urgent care for a yeast infection, what to expect, and how doctors treat infections. Urgent care centers offer immediate, same-day care without an appointment. They treat peopl...

Yungblud Had 'Ringworm' on First Billie Eilish Meetup, Miley Cyrus' Alleged BF Says - Music Times

Image
Yungblud had ringworm during his first encounter with Billie Eilish. Miley Cyrus's alleged BF revealed that squeamish information himself.   The "11 Minutes" hitmaker has pondered on his bond with the "Bad Guy" singer, as he remembers acquiring the fungal infection - which causes an unsightly rash in the skin - in a model room when he was traveling in 2018.  Speaking to Spin magazine, he said: "Every artist that's around now that's big is there because they say something or perform like a God."  He detailed, "I've known Billie since she was in f****** dungarees. Billie's known me since I broke my leg and I was driving around America in a wheelchair on my first tour [in 2018] in a fucking van, staying in Motel 6's, getting ringworm."  "I got ringworm now. It comes back because of the f****** Motel 6's." he further shared.  This just shows what kind of a fr...

Characterizing spillover dynamics and global transmission patterns of avian influenza A viruses - News-Medical.Net

Image
In a recent study published in the PLoS Pathogens journal, researchers assessed the impact of ecological variations of wild birds on avian influenza spillover. Study: Ecological divergence of wild birds drives avian influenza spillover and global spread. Image Credit: hedgehog94/Shutterstock Prediction of spillover from wildlife to domestic animals and humans is gaining importance, especially after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Hence, it is essential to research the different transmission dynamics among avian reservoirs thoroughly. About the study In the present study, researchers investigated the contribution of avian hosts to viral spillover and global transmission to assess the spillover pathways at the interface of wild and domestic animals. The team obtained samples from wild birds caught across North America from 2008 to 2018, generating 888 influenza samples. The collected samples were compared with the reference sequences correspondi...
