On Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrated the announcement that Africa was free of cases of the wild virus that causes the crippling disease, a landmark in a decades-long campaign to eradicate it. Africa eradicates polio, but vaccine-driven outbreaks rise - Down To Earth Magazine Africa eradicates polio, but vaccine-driven outbreaks rise - Down To Earth Magazine Posted: 27 Aug 2020 01:55 AM PDT In Asia, India too was declared polio-free in 2014, but cVDPV was reported 50 times in the country in the past six years The polio virus, that once paralysed nearly 75,000 children every year in Africa, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) — a public-private partnership to tackle polio — was eradicated August 25, 2020. The continent may celebrate the eradication of the wild poliovirus, which spreads from person-to-person — usually through contaminated water — usually  leading to p...

"As a young boy growing up in Malawi, I remember being impressed by the positive impact and influence that radio had on my community, and this inspired me to become a broadcaster. So, I began working in public health communications. Early in my career, I worked with international non-governmental organizations in Africa focused on...
