The shocking return of polio to Malaysia after 27 years - The Star Online The shocking return of polio to Malaysia after 27 years - The Star Online Posted: 30 Dec 2019 04:30 PM PST The report that a three-month old boy from Tuaran, Sabah was admitted to the intensive care unit with poliomyelitis or polio, was shocking. This was the first reported case in 27 years in Malaysia. The last documented case was in 1992 and the last outbreak was in 1977, with 121 cases due to wild polio. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Malaysia polio-free in 2000. Polio, a viral disease, usually affects children below five years. It is spread by direct contact, primarily through the faecal-oral route and less often, through contaminated water or food leading to multiplication of the virus in the intestines. The virus attacks the nervous system and causes irreversible paralysis, usually of the legs, in one in 200 infections. Of those paralysed, 5...

Complacency could delay the final push to eradicate polio - The Conversation Africa Complacency could delay the final push to eradicate polio - The Conversation Africa Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:00 AM PST Great strides have been made in the global effort to eradicate polio. Reported cases of wild poliovirus have decreased by over 99% from an estimated 350,000 cases in 1988 to 33 in 2018. Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus that invades the nervous system, and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. It's spread mainly through food and water that are contaminated with faecal matter. The goals to eradicate polio by 2000, then 2018, were both missed. There are three strains of wild poliovirus: type 1, type 2 and type 3. Wild polio virus type 2 was eradicated in 2015. Most recently, the World Health Organisation announced that type 3 poliovirus had been eradicated. The goal of ending all three types of the vir...

India's immunisation drive: Battling disease and ensuring a healthy future for mankind - Khmer Times India's immunisation drive: Battling disease and ensuring a healthy future for mankind - Khmer Times Posted: 30 Dec 2019 10:01 AM PST As the world stands on the threshold of eradicating several dreaded diseases and having already eliminated some others, there is no doubt that immunisation has been the single-most effective public health intervention tool in the 21st century. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that immunisation saves the lives of 2.5 million people annually and protects millions more from child mortality, birth defects and lifelong disabilities. The world is today closer than ever to eradicating polio. Measles and rubella have been eliminated from the Americas and maternal and neonatal tetanus has been eradicated in Southeast Asia. India has always battled to keep its people safe and healthy. On ...

This progress comes as intensive planning and coordination has yielded many pathbreaking strategies: from community-based vaccination (CBV) to new surveillance methods for eradication; from a strong operational platform and full organisational accountability, to innovations in monitoring and evaluation that give visibility into the programme's toughest challenges. Yet even with this progress, Pakistan remains one of only two countries still reporting WPV ca...

Further progress in reducing the burden of disease is inhibited, in part, by vaccine underperformance in certain settings. Early trials suggested that oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), when administered concomitantly with rotavirus vaccine, reduces rotavirus seroconversion rates after the first rotavirus dose with modest or nonsignificant interference after complet...
