Mental Health Conditions Can Heighten Covid-19 Risk, C.D.C. Says - The New York Times

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is trying to head off a Dec. 8 deadline imposed by the Biden administration for federal contractors to get vaccinated. Calvin Knight/The Ledger, via Associated Press Calling a rule that federal contractors must show proof of Covid-19 vaccination or submit to weekly testing a "heavy-handed mandate," Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida announced on Thursday that his administration was suing the federal government to challenge the requirement. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Tampa, seeks to block a Dec. 8 deadline imposed by the Biden administration for federal contractors to get vaccinated. Legal experts say the federal government has broad authority to address a public health crisis like the pandemic with measures like vaccine mandates and that such suits have little chance of succeeding. The Supreme Court has turned away legal challenges to vaccine mandates at Indiana University and for health care workers in Maine. Mr. DeSantis, a Republican, ...

Rapid test linked to improved antibiotic therapy for bloodstream infections Use of a rapid diagnostic test in patients with bloodstream infections (BSIs) was associated with shorter times to optimal antibiotic therapy and antibiotic de-escalation, researchers reported yesterday in Clinical Infectious Diseases. In the quasi-experimental, multicenter Improving Outcome and Antimicrobial Stewardship (IOAS) study, researchers compared clinical and antimicrobial stewardship metrics in BSI patients at 5 US hospitals before and after implementation of Accelerate PhenoTest BC Kit (AXDX) testing. AXDX is a rapid diagnostic platform that provides pathogen identification and antibiotic susceptibility test (ID/AST) results from positive blood cultures up to 40 hours earlier than traditional methods. The primary outcomes were time to optimal therapy (TTOT) within 96 hours of blood culture positivity and 30-day mortality. A total of 854 patients with BSI (435 pre-AXDX, 419 post-AXDX) were included in...

World Polio Day: The effect of COVID-19 and what to do next - World Economic Forum

Image
Sunday 24 October is World Polio Day. While recent years have seen advancements in eradicating polio, COVID-19 has stalled these efforts. The UN is preparing to vaccinate children under 5 in Afghanistan, after the Taliban recently agreed to the campaign. Two years ago the world celebrated significant progress in ending polio. Thanks to a major global public health collaboration and mass vaccination efforts, the World Health Organization reported two of the three wild poliovirus strains had been eradicated. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a sudden hold to many of these advancements. What is polio? Polio is a life-threatening disease caused by a very contagious virus that only affects people. Its most severe symptom is paralysis, which can lead to permanent disability or death if the virus affects the muscles that help people breathe. Even people who contract polio as children and seem to fully recover can develop...

Schools Helped Defeat Polio and Diphtheria With Vaccine Efforts. Can They Do It With COVID? - Education Week

Image
As educators work to help vaccinate students against COVID-19, the history of schools' involvement with past inoculation efforts shows how teachers, principals, and others in the K-12 world can have a significant influence on the views of parents and others. But the current cultural atmosphere—rife with partisan conflict and distrust in public institutions—also has many public health experts worried that what worked in the past faces a far higher lift in the current pandemic. In fights against diphtheria and polio in the 1920s and 1950s, respectively, schools played a central role. They hosted information sessions, coordinated with local civic groups and the media, and commanded trust in their communities. Experts saw the influence of teachers, principals, superintendents, and other educators not just as helpful, but crucial. "Schools have been critical sites for where public health officials for generations have thought about the importance of high vaccination rates," sa...

New Delhi: Every year, 3.7 million deaths occur due to diabetes and high blood glucose, of which diabetes causes 1.5 million deaths globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). A total of 422 million adults have diabetes, and one in 11 people live with this serious health disease.  A new study published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport has now suggested a simple method that can help prevent serious health conditions like Type 2 diabetes. They said taking a break from long hours of sitting to stand up can do the wonder.  The research conducted by scientists from Finland's Turku PET Centre and UKK Institute discovered a link between standing and better insulin sensitivity, observing that insulin function improves when the participants interrupted long periods of sitting by standing up.  Diabetes increases the risk for the occurrence of complications like stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and heart disease. People ...
