A look back on the Polio epidemic - Madison County Carrier A look back on the Polio epidemic - Madison County Carrier Posted: 30 Apr 2020 12:41 PM PDT Mickey Starling  reporter3@greenepublishing.com History is littered with pandemics and epidemics that have each killed millions of people. Cholera and Flu have been at the center of pandemics since the 1800s. The current coronavirus pandemic is the first to be caused by possible human error at a Chinese laboratory in the Wuhan Province. Charles Caverly, MD, was the first to note that the disease could occur with or without paralysis. He incorrectly stated that Polio was not contagious. Society might forget coronavirus sooner than you think - New Statesman Society might forget coronavirus sooner than you think - New Statesman Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:13 AM PDT One thing that's struck me during this pandemic is how small the imprint on our collective public consciousness the last pandemic – the HIV-Aids epidemic – has left. It features in a number of fantastic novels – The Line of Beauty , A Vicious Circle , the Tales of the City series to name just a few – but as far as the mainstream media goes, let alone the public's overall understanding of the emergence and defeat of "new" diseases, it has clearly not registered very deeply. You can see this in some of the reporting and commentary around the race for a vaccine. Even a cursory acquaintance with the long fight against HIV-Aids, dotted with various false dawns, ought to have left us more aware that there are fits and starts in the fight against a new disea...

The Final Frontier in the Fight Against Polio? Sewers - OZY The Final Frontier in the Fight Against Polio? Sewers - OZY Posted: 19 Apr 2020 03:01 AM PDT Every week, Lucky Sangal and her team at the World Heath Organization in India put on masks and gloves, tie a rope to a bucket and throw it into a flowing sewage stream at seven designated sites in New Delhi. They then pull out the bucket, filter the wastewater through a fine mesh cloth and pour it into test bottles that are sent to a lab in refrigerated containers. About 15 days later, Sangal's team gets a report listing everything found in the smelly sample, including bacteria that can cause common ailments from urinary tract infections to diarrhea. "All of those things that typically live in sewage are OK," says Sangal, who oversees the sampling operation to prevent disease spread. "What we don't want to see is polio." India was declared polio free six years ag...
