Two Strains of Polio Down, One to Go - Scientific American Two Strains of Polio Down, One to Go - Scientific American Posted: 23 Oct 2019 11:48 AM PDT In January 2014 an American public health worker was visiting northern Nigeria to observe a polio prevention campaign by local health workers. It was a big, festive event with a marching band to bring out parents and children for their immunizations. But the American visitor and the local program manager soon found themselves being drawn away from the action, down deserted streets to an area still under construction. They were being led by a young girl. "And what was happening was that she was bringing us to her house," recalls John Vertefeuille, now chief of the polio eradication branch at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "She had a baby brother born the night before, and the father brought out the baby, and we were able to vaccinate him. She was so exci...

Two Strains of Polio Are Gone, but the End of the Disease Is Still Far Off - The New York Times Two Strains of Polio Are Gone, but the End of the Disease Is Still Far Off - The New York Times Posted: 23 Oct 2019 03:00 PM PDT In another milestone on the long, expensive and sometimes discouraging road to wiping out polio, global health officials announced Wednesday that two of the three strains of wild polio virus have officially been eliminated. Although that brings the world another step closer to eradication, the effort has taken far longer than was ever anticipated. When the campaign began in 1988, most public health officials and donors expected the battle to be over by 2000. But two major obstacles emerged. First, millions of families around the world have not let their children have the drops because of persistent false rumors that the vaccine is a Western plot to sterilize Muslim girls or do other harm . Second, in some co...

Working toward a polio-free world - Cumberland News Now Working toward a polio-free world - Cumberland News Now Posted: 30 Oct 2019 08:08 PM PDT There was a time when almost everyone knew somebody who had died or had been crippled by the polio virus. Now, only someone older than 65 will have had that experience. These days, no one is aware of the fact that whole schools were closed whenever there was a polio outbreak. An example: In 1916, 27,000 people were paralyzed in New York City alone. It was 64 years ago that Dr. Jonas Salk's vaccine was introduced. For the last 40 years there have been no new polio cases in the U.S. and Canada because of vaccination. By 1994 the rest of the Americas was totally polio free. Not so in the rest of the world, especially Asia and Africa. The polio virus is easily transmitted, especially in countries with poor sanitation and unclean water. The virus attacks the nervous system, which in turn affe...

Cutting risk: On India’s anti-polio drive - The Hindu Cutting risk: On India’s anti-polio drive - The Hindu Posted: 25 Oct 2019 11:35 AM PDT The world polio day on October 24 marked an important milestone in the war against polio when the Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication officially declared that wild poliovirus type 3 has been eradicated. The last case of wild poliovirus type 3 was seen in northern Nigeria in 2012. This is the second wild poliovirus to be declared eliminated — the first was in 2015 when type 2 wild poliovirus was declared as eliminated. With two of the three wild polioviruses eliminated, only type 1 wild poliovirus is still in circulation and is restricted to just two countries — Afghanistan and Pakistan. As on October 23, there were 18 cases of polio caused by wild virus type 1 in Afghanistan and 76 polio cases in Pakistan this year. While the number of cases reported this year f...
