Officials say the development is the result of public aversion to vaccines. Health officials yesterday reported the country's first polio case since 2000 - a three-year-old girl in Lanao del Sur province, 1,000km south of the capital Manila. They are also trying to confirm a case of acute flaccid paralysis - a neurological disease that causes sudden weakness or paralysis in any part of the body - which could have been due to polio. The polio virus was also discovered in sewage samples taken in Manila and Davao City, home turf of President Rodrigo Duterte. Poliomyelitis, or polio, attacks the nervous system and can cause i...

The polio outbreak in the Philippines is confirmed to be from a circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2.  This is of particular concern, as wild poliovirus type 2 was certified as globally eradicated in 2015, reports the DOH. The last known case of wild poliovirus recorded in the Philippines was in 1993. Additionally, environmental samples from sewage in Manila and waterways in Davao were confirmed to contain the virus, reported the ...

UNICEF-WHO Philippines: Polio Outbreak Situation Report #2 (30 September 2019) - Philippines - ReliefWeb UNICEF-WHO Philippines: Polio Outbreak Situation Report #2 (30 September 2019) - Philippines - ReliefWeb Posted: 30 Sep 2019 04:22 AM PDT On 19 September 2019, the Philippines Department of Health (DOH) declared a polio outbreak after 2 confirmed polio cases of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2). Environmental samples taken from Manila and Davao also tested positive for VDPV2, as well as for VDPV1. Because circulating VDPV2 (cVDPV2) is highly contagious and expected to spread rapidly among unvaccinated children, cVDPV2 response is being prioritized over response to VDPV1. DOH is planning 3 rounds of vaccination targeting under-five children in Mindanao with monovalent Oral Polio Vaccine (mOPV) for poliovirus type 2, scheduled for mid-October (Lanao del Sur and Davao del Sur including Marawi and Davao city), mid-November 2...

Espinosa ZAMBOANGA CITY, Sep. 24 (PIA) – The Department of Health (DOH) is urging parents to have their children vaccinated against polio, as two confirmed cases have already been reported in the Philippines this year. In the previous year, only 71% of the target population was immunized in Zamboanga Peninsula (ZamPen). DOH IX Regional Director, Dr. Emilia Monicimpo said, the DOH is targeting 95% coverage of immunization, but last year this was not achieved, accordingly due to information dissemination gaps and also due to the lack of access to health facilities. Troubling return - INQUIRER.net Troubling return - INQUIRER.net Posted: 05 Sep 2019 12:00 AM PDT It's another health nightmare waiting to happen — unless the nation acts quickly. On top of the twin epidemics of measles and dengue afflicting thousands of Filipinos, mostly children, at present, the Department of Health (DOH) has revealed that two samples taken from Manila's sewage this year tested positive for vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV). ADVERTISEMENT Why is this deeply troubling news? Because the Philippines has been certified polio-free since 2000 by the DOH, with the last recorded polio case in 1993. The return of the polio virus thus indicates a breakdown in the public health program that eradicated the disease and helps keep it at bay. That appears to be the drop in oral polio vaccine (OPV) coverage in recent years, exacerbated by the widespread vaccine scare generated by the Dengvaxia controversy. "In 20...
